Three years ago, the Blue Jackets acquired Laine from the Winnipeg Jets. They also signed Johnny Gaudreau as a free agent, hoping to form an impressive top line. While it looked good on paper, it hasn't worked out on the ice. Laine played in just 15 games last season due to injury and mental health struggles.
Now, it seems he's ready to move on. TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports that Laine and his agent are working with the Blue Jackets to arrange a trade:
While this news may come as a surprise to some within the organization, the team's struggles during Laine's tenure make this move understandable. Despite his challenges, Laine has still managed to score 28 goals in his last 73 NHL games. With the Blue Jackets drafting Adam Fantilli a year ago and having another top pick in 2024, the future looks promising in Columbus. Finding the right return for Laine could be the best move for both parties.
