A new report from Elliotte Friedman today confirmed that a recent business deal by the Washington Capitals is set to disrupt 23 NHL teams.
Recently, the Washington Capitals agreed to buy the popular NHL contract website CapFriendly. This site tracks contracts, buyouts, and salary cap details, offering many useful tools for its users.
It won't happen until July, but according to multiple sources, the Washington Capitals have reached an agreement to purchase the outstanding CapFriendly website
Friedman confirmed that 23 NHL teams rely on CapFriendly for managing contracts. These teams will now need to find a new public resource or create their own system from scratch.
Friedman names teams that have something when CapFriendly goes offline (32TP): Seattle, New Jersey, Carolina, Chicago, Islanders, Toronto, Columbus. Pittsburgh didn't have anything before, but once Dubas got there they started building something.
While a replacement for CapFriendly might emerge over the summer, there is no guarantee it will be as good. NHL teams may need to invest resources to create their own version of the site to ensure the same quality.
As the offseason begins and CapFriendly shuts down, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for a new site to take its place. Hopefully, a new resource will be available soon.
