The news is truly heartbreaking for the Gaudreau family, as it was confirmed today that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau, a former professional player, tragically lost their lives in a terrible accident.

The Gaudreau brothers were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey. Both died from their injuries.

Since the tragedy, the hockey community has come together to show support and remember the former Boston College players.

This loss is especially devastating for Sean Monahan, who signed a five-year contract worth $5.5 million per season earlier this year. Monahan had been looking forward to reuniting with Gaudreau, his close friend and former teammate.

Monahan and Gaudreau played together for nine seasons with the Calgary Flames, and Gaudreau joined the Blue Jackets as a free agent in July 2022. The two had a strong on-ice connection, each consistently earning over 55 points in their first five seasons together.

«I am really looking forward to being teammates with Johnny again,» had said Monahan at the time of his signing. «Johnny is motivated to have a big season and be a huge part of the team and I'm excited to have the opportunity to reignite the chemistry we had for close to a decade.

«He is an amazing teammate, person and friend. I'm looking forward to these next five years.»

This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved. Our thoughts go out to Monahan and all those who loved Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.

Johnny Gaudreau is survived by his wife, Meredith, their two young children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, Guy and Jane, and his sisters Kristen and Katie.
