The Detroit Red Wings have received some unfortunate news in regards to one of their top prospects.

Niederbach Receives Major Suspension For Vicious Hit

Detroit Red Wings prospect Theodor Niederbach, currently playing for MoDo Hockey in the Swedish Hockey League, received a suspension and fine for a high hit on Axel Rindell of Timra. Niederbach was given a match penalty and ejected from the game. He's facing a four-game suspension and a fine equivalent to just over $600.

"MoDo is appealing the disciplinary board's decision to suspend Theodor Niederbach for four matches after this situation, reports Expressen" - X post translated to English

MoDo Hockey is appealing the disciplinary decision, arguing that Rindell should have had his head up and taken responsibility. Henrik Gradin, MoDo's sports director, expressed concern about the severity of the punishment and the direction of Swedish ice hockey.

«We think the outcome is far too harsh considering that their players take no responsibility at all in this case,» MoDo sports director Henrik Gradin wrote in a text message to Swedish website Expressen. «I'm afraid of where Swedish ice hockey is going,»

Niederbach, drafted 51st overall in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Red Wings, must be offered a contract by June 1 to retain his NHL rights. So far this season, he has five goals and five assists in 42 games with MoDo.
