Detroit Red Wings prospect Theodor Niederbach, currently playing for MoDo Hockey in the Swedish Hockey League, received a suspension and fine for a high hit on Axel Rindell of Timra. Niederbach was given a match penalty and ejected from the game. He's facing a four-game suspension and a fine equivalent to just over $600.
MoDo Hockey is appealing the disciplinary decision, arguing that Rindell should have had his head up and taken responsibility. Henrik Gradin, MoDo's sports director, expressed concern about the severity of the punishment and the direction of Swedish ice hockey.
Niederbach, drafted 51st overall in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Red Wings, must be offered a contract by June 1 to retain his NHL rights. So far this season, he has five goals and five assists in 42 games with MoDo.
