There's no doubt that Datsyuk deserves to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, he was one of the most exciting players in the league to watch.
Unfortunately, his Russian nationality and his ties with Russia, in the current difficult climate, could come in the way of this happening.
Indeed, according to a new report from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Datsyuk shouldn't be allowed into the HHoF, nor back in Canada, because he attended an event to honor Russian soldiers who contributed to the genocide in Ukraine.
Here's what they posted on X:
The CEO and Executive Director of the UCC, Ihor Michalchyshyn, believes Datsyuk should automatically be disqualified from the HHoF despite his great hockey career.
Political affiliations never came in the way of recognizing a player's talent or his contributions to the sport, and it looks like it won't start now.
Set to enter the HHoF next November, nothing indicates that the NHL will change their mind.
Datsyuk played 953 games in the NHL between 2001 and 2016 with the Detroit Red Wings. He scored 918 points, including 314 goals in that time, and won two Stanley Cups: in 2002 and 2008.
