Its hard not to feel bad for Campbell. By all accounts, he seems to be a well-liked guy who is very nice and wholesome. Unfortunately though, his play has fallen off a cliff as he can't seem to provide NHL quality goaltending anymore. He was sent down after just five games with the Oilers in which he put up a 4.50 goals-against-average and an .873 save percentage.
Since then, he has played in 9 games at the AHL level with the Bakersfield Condors. In those games he is 4-5 with a 3.61 goals-against-average and an .888 save percentage. Those numbers are not acceptable even at the AHL level. Bad has gone to worse for Campbell as he was even pulled in his last start halfway through the game after he gave up 4 goals on 21 shots.
For comparison, the other two goalies to play games for the Condors this year have a combined 4-4-2 record. Both have goals-against-averages of just over 2.00 and both have save percentages above .930. At this point, Campbell's training assignment is hurting the entire organization as the Condors are actively hurting themselves by playing Campbell.
Perhaps the team will call up Ollie Rodrigue instead of Campbell. Regardless though, Campbell is not an option for the Oilers, no matter how much they want that to be the case.
