Last night, the Oilers suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets, but lost much more than two points, as Connor McDavid left the ice only a few seconds after the start of the first period. He tried to enter the offensive zone but was hit on the skates with a stick and fell alongside the boards. He remained on the ice for a few seconds but never came back in the game after that shift.
Here's how it happened:
After the game, McDavid's linemate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins stated that they must do a better job stepping up for their captain when he gets injured by an opponent:
The Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch also shared his thoughts about McDavid's injury, saying it's a great opportunity for players, who could get more responsibilities during the captain's recovery:
With McDavid returning to Edmonton to be evaluated, the Oilers will need to review their game plan as they prepare to face the Nashville Predators on Thursday night.
