On a recent edition of the Missin Curfew podcast, Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry finally opened up on his reasons for leaving the Anaheim Ducks after 14 seasons.

Corey Perry, now 39 years old, has had a long and illustrious career in the NHL, playing 1,311 games in 19 years. Yet, most current fans likely know him most from his underwhelming appearance with the Edmonton Oilers during the last NHL playoffs. Unfortunately, he has garnered a name for himself as a Stanley Cup curse, seeming to guarantee his team a loss since he first won it in 2007. This did not change after the Florida Panthers successfully prevented the veteran forward and his teammates from pulling off a reverse sweep, cutting them down in Game 7.

However, those who have followed the league longer know him for his 14-year run with the Anaheim Ducks, which lasted from 2005 until 2019, when he started playing for the Dallas Stars. Now, five years and five teams later, Corey Perry has finally opened up about what led to him parting ways with his inaugural NHL franchise. In a recent interview on the Missin Curfew podcast, the Edmonton Oilers forward shared that the tram ultimately wanted to go in a different direction with his decrease in form and production. He acknowledges the hurt it gave him but also credits that interaction as the reason he still plays in the league.

"That was a tough conversation. I remember being in Toronto with my wife and going to dinner with my agents and, you know, they told me the news right at dinner. They wanted to do it face-to-face. They wanted to tell me before, you know. The word got out and it started circulating, and it got back to me, you know. It's tough to hear those words. It's a kick to your ego: a kick to your character, but, you know, at the end of the day everybody knows this place is a business- that what we're doing is a business, and, you know, they decided to go in a different way and at the end of the day, it's probably helped my career, you know, to say the least. That's probably why I'm still playing. If I stayed in Anaheim, I don't think I'd still be playing. I think I'd be retired and doing something else, so this has definitely, definitely been- you know it was tough hearing those words coming out of their mouth and hearing the news, and you know, it lit a fire under my a** and that's why I'm still going."

Despite this revelation, the greater team contract scandal occurred during his time with the Chicago Blackhawks. Rumors claimed that the veteran forward had an inappropriate interaction with rising star Connor Bedard's mother, yet this was proven to be false. Instead, Corey Perry reportedly engaged in uncouth behavior at a team function, causing them to remove him from the team.

"After an internal investigation, the Chicago Blackhawks have determined that Corey Perry has engaged in conduct that is unacceptable, and in violation both of the terms of his Standard Player's Contract and the Blackhawks' internal policies intended to promote professional and safe work environments. As such, Corey Perry has been placed on unconditional waivers. In the event Mr. Perry clears waivers, we intend to terminate his contract effective immediately."

Now, Corey Perry has one season under his belt with the Edmonton Oilers, who he shared could not have been more welcoming. He praised all the team members, namely Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, for their hospitality as he continued his journey through the NHL with a new team.

"They welcomed me with open arms. You know, I talked with Connor (McDavid) a little bit when I was going through everything of where to sign and, you know, doing some things. You know, it's- I didn't know Leon (Draisaitl), Leon it's unbelievable. You know, just everybody- everybody was welcoming, and, you know, I'm just- I just came in with an open mind and... and just did my thing and away we went."

Corey Perry scored 12 goals and 22 total points in 54 games last season with the Oilers but has 905 total points over 1300 career games with the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Chicago Blackhawks on top of that, despite the controversial contract termination. Now with Edmonton looking even better than their last season, Corey Perry may finally get the chance to break his ages-long up Stanley Cup curse.
