Crosby, who was drafted first overall by Pittsburgh in 2005, is now 37 years old and on an expiring contract. Questions are swirling about what his next deal might look like and whether he wants to stay with a rebuilding team for the rest of his career.
With Pittsburgh facing salary cap challenges, it's unclear what kind of offer Crosby will accept. Speaking on the "32 Thoughts" podcast, Elliotte Friedman shared his thoughts on why there's no deal yet. He believes Crosby isn't feeling rushed to make a decision.
Crosby is set to attend the NHL Player Media Tour in Las Vegas soon, and Friedman speculated that he might sign an extension before the event to avoid constant questions about his contract.
«They have to start building up the pipeline and the youth. One thing I wonder is if Crosby is simply sitting here saying I've got no problem with the offers, I've got no problem with the Penguins, but if we're not going to be making the playoffs, am I going to be able to handle that?' I think that's one of the things he's kinda weighing. «My prediction is he stays, cause I think he's a Penguin and he wants to be a Penguin, but I've tried to ask around why isn't done, and I think one of the reasons is it's the summer and he does not need to rush, he's still got time, and I think the other one is «am I going to be able to deal with [not taking part in the playoffs]?
Though rumors have swirled about Crosby potentially being traded, Friedman believes he will stay in Pittsburgh, where he's played his entire career. However, the decision is ultimately in Crosby's hands, and we may get an answer before next week's media tour.
