Elliotte Friedman addresses the Jeff Marek firing in his 32 Thoughts debut with Kyle Bukauskas
Elliotte Friedman finally addressed the firing of Jeff Marek on the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, now with new co-host Kyle Bukauskas.
Earlier this summer, fans were surprised to learn that Sportsnet had quietly let go of longtime host and analyst Jeff Marek. Reports suggested that Marek had leaked private information about players in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. While Marek has yet to return to hockey media, he did release a statement confirming his departure from Sportsnet and hinting at future plans. He was also spotted reporting in Europe at one point.
With the 2024-25 NHL season approaching, Friedman has returned with 32 Thoughts. On Thursday, Sportsnet announced that Kyle Bukauskas, a well-known in-arena host, would join the show as Marek's replacement.
By Friday morning, Friedman and Bukauskas had released their first episode as co-hosts. During the episode, Friedman spoke fondly about his time working with Marek but chose not to discuss the specifics of Marek's departure from Sportsnet. He shared that Sportsnet had offered him the option to leave the show after Marek's exit, but he decided to stay. Friedman produced a solo episode in mid-August before teaming up with Bukauskas.
My belief has always been, it's Jeff Marek's story to speak about first and that's the way I'm going to leave it. When Jeff talks, some day after that, I will talk. Jeff is a great broadcaster, he brought out the best in me in this podcast and he's a huge reason why it's got to where it is. I will miss his stupid weird ideas, and I will miss working with him,» Friedman added. «As great as he is a broadcaster, he's an even better person I believe Jeff will land on his feet. I look forward to seeing what the next chapter in his life is.»

In their first episode together, Friedman and Bukauskas discussed each NHL team's offseason moves, paid tribute to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, speculated on a potential Sidney Crosby contract extension, and looked ahead at what might be in store for Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
