The NHL has changed its rules over the years regarding how much contact players can have with goalies in the crease. The league wants to keep goalies safe, which has limited how much players can crowd the net. But for someone like Corey Perry, who's been in the league for nearly 20 years and is known for being a pest, it's been a tough adjustment.
During Sunday's Battle of Alberta, Perry had a goal waved off for goaltender interference after he tipped a puck past Flames goalie Dan Vladar. After a video review, the goal was overturned because it was ruled Perry was too close to Vladar and interfered with his ability to make the save. Perry wasn't happy and voiced his frustration from the bench.
The NHL explained their decision, stating that Perry had a "significant presence" in the crease that impaired Vladar's ability to play his position. Many, including Perry, felt the call was soft. Upon closer look, Perry seemed to set a good screen, and there was some space between him and Vladar.
This is just another setback for the Oilers, who have been outscored 15-3 and are still searching for their first win. They'll get another chance when they face the Philadelphia Flyers at home on Tuesday, and Perry will hope to get an official goal on the board this time.
