As we enter the second month of the NHL free agency period, all eyes are on the defending Western Conference champions, the Edmonton Oilers. According to PuckPedia, the Oilers are currently over the salary cap by $354,167 and still need to sign two of their restricted free agents, forward Dylan Holloway and defenseman Philip Broberg.
Due to Edmonton's cap situation, Brian La Rose of Pro Hockey Rumours believes that Holloway and Broberg could be prime targets for offer sheets from other NHL teams before the next season begins.
Broberg and Holloway are likely targets for offer sheets because Holloway is looking to play in the NHL full-time next season and showed his potential during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, appearing in all 25 of the Oilers' games. However, he's not getting enough ice time in Edmonton, so a change might benefit him. Broberg, selected eighth overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, has developed more slowly than expected but had a career year in the AHL with 38 points in 49 games and played in 10 playoff games for the Oilers.
New Oilers GM Stan Bowman would be in a tough spot if either player received an offer sheet. He would have to match the offer, pushing the team further over the cap, or let the player go and accept compensation based on the contract's yearly salary.
People will be watching closely to see if any team risks offer sheeting Holloway or Broberg and how Stan Bowman manages to get the team back under the cap while signing these two players by opening night in October.
