Koskinen's NHL journey began when the New York Islanders drafted him 31st overall in 2009. Although he showed promise, he only played four games with the Islanders during the 2010-11 season, spending most of his time with their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Despite his limited NHL experience, he earned recognition for his strong saves as the Islanders' top goaltender.
Afterward, Koskinen sought opportunities to develop his skills in the KHL, playing two years with Novosibirsk Sibir and four years with St. Petersburg SKA. In 2018, at the age of 30, he returned to the NHL and spent four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. Despite a decent save percentage of .903 and a 2.98 goals-against average, Koskinen faced criticism from both Oilers fans and head coach Dave Tippett. He eventually left the team to play in Switzerland.
Koskinen has now decided to retire from hockey, two years after his last NHL game. The 36-year-old has transitioned into a career as a player agent in his home country of Finland. According to Ilta Sanomat, Koskinen has sold his shares in the SM-liiga club Kiekko-Espoo and has been approved as a registered agent by the players' association.
While many professional hockey players dream of staying on the ice forever, Koskinen recognized that his time as a goaltender had come to an end. Fortunately, he has already made significant strides in his new career, and his future as a player agent looks promising.
