NHL insider Greg Wyshynski suggested on the Jeff Marek show that Leon Draisaitl might sign with the San Jose Sharks in free agency. Draisaitl has been outstanding in the playoffs this year, leading in scoring with 20 points, including 9 goals in nine games. His closest competitor is teammate Connor McDavid with 18 points.
Many of Draisaitl's points have come from the power play, including 6 of his 9 goals. He is just one goal behind Mark Messier's franchise record for power play goals in a single postseason.
Wyshynski speculated that this could be one of Draisaitl's last seasons with the Oilers. He proposed the idea of Draisaitl signing with the Sharks, noting that the speculation has been around for a while, partly because Sharks owner Hasso Plattner is German, like Draisaitl.
The Sharks are currently not a top team, but they have promising young players and potential high draft picks. Wyshynski mentioned the potential of Macklin Celebrini, the expected first overall pick in 2024, joining the team soon, along with 2023 fourth overall pick Will Smith and 2021 seventh overall pick William Eklund. Adding Draisaitl to this group could make the Sharks a strong team quickly.
This idea may seem far-fetched, but it's an intriguing possibility for the Sharks to emerge from their rebuild.
