Tuesday was a challenging day for the Edmonton Oilers, as news broke that the St. Louis Blues had submitted offer sheets for two of their restricted free agents-Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Broberg's offer is a two-year deal with an AAV of $4.58 million USD, while Holloway's deal is also for two years, with an AAV of $2.29 million per season. The Oilers now have seven days to decide whether to match these offers. If they choose not to, they will receive a 2025 second-round pick for Broberg and a 2025 third-round pick for Holloway.
Following this news, Bob Stauffer appeared on "Oilers Now" and revealed that upper management had urged then-GM Ken Holland to sign Broberg and Holloway to contracts as far back as January. At that time, both players were in the American Hockey League, and Stauffer mentioned that the Oilers could have secured them for a lower cost. However, Holland did not act on this advice. He left the Oilers organization in June, and shortly after, Broberg and Holloway became restricted free agents.
One fan speculated that Holland may have orchestrated the offer sheets with Doug Armstrong as a form of revenge for not extending his own contract. However, this seems unlikely, as both sides mutually agreed not to extend Holland's contract, and he had already informed the Oilers that he did not wish to return for the 2024-25 season.
The coming week will be crucial for the Oilers as they decide whether to match the offer sheets for Broberg and Holloway. Although NHL teams are allowed to exceed the cap by 10% during the summer, matching both contracts could complicate their salary cap situation ahead of training camp.
