Today, the Stanley Cup was unveiled with the names of the Florida Panthers' 2024 champions engraved, causing controversy. The trophy, which was sent to Montreal for engraving by Louise St. Jacques, now includes two unexpected names: Jonah Gadjovich and Josh Mahura.

A player is required to have appeared in at least 41 regular-season games with a team, or one Stanley Cup Final game, to be eligible to have his name engraved on the trophy.

Despite these rules, when the Florida Panthers' Stanley Cup was revealed today, fans were surprised to see the names of Gadjovich and Mahura included, leading to a wave of controversy. These players did not meet the typical game participation requirements, raising questions about fairness and favoritism.

The NHL made two exceptions for players that would get their names on the cup with the #Panthers, despite not reaching the games played eligibility:

Jonah Gadjovich (@jgadjovich) 🇨🇦
Josh Mahura (@joshmahura) 🇨🇦

Both deserved for sure, great to see the team petition to get them on the cup.

Due to this, Gary Bettman has been accused of favouritism by the community though due to certain stipulations that were formed all the way back in 1994, these accusations are floaty at best.

In 1994, a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players' names put on the Stanley Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play. The management staff engraved on the trophy is determined by the team.

However, it must be approved by the Hockey Hall of Fame and NHL. The maximum number of names a championship team can engrave on the trophy is 55.

The Panthers successfully petitioned on behalf of Gadjovich and Mahura, leading to their inclusion on the Cup. This has sparked a new debate on whether other names should have been considered under similar exemptions.

Now, all the Florida Panthers players, including Jonah Gadjovich and Josh Mahura, will have their special day with the Stanley Cup, celebrating their victory with friends and family.
