According to insider Chris Johnston, the Minnesota Wild have officially claimed defenseman Declan Chisholm from the Winnipeg Jets.
The Winnipeg Jets were hesitant to place the young blueliner on waivers at the season's start, the Jets kept him on the extended roster, where he played only two games.
Despite the Jets facing injuries mainly on offense this season, the defense has remained relatively consistent. Nate Schmidt, once out of the rotation, has returned as a regular partner for Dylan Samberg. However, with the team unable to part ways with Logan Stanley, they lost both Johnathan Kovacevic and Chisholm to waivers, along with other significant draft capital losses.
Chisholm, limited to two games this season, contributed one assist and holds a plus-1 rating. Now, he'll have a new opportunity with the Minnesota Wild. Buried behind Stanley and occasionally Ville Heinola, Chisholm will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, earning $775,000.
Had he passed through unclaimed, Chisholm could have played for the AHL's Manitoba Moose, a team in need of defensive support.
