The Montreal Canadiens have brought up defenseman Arber Xhekaj from the Laval Rocket, as announced on Monday.
This move was anticipated when Justin Barron was reassigned to Laval earlier in the day. Xhekaj, who played 17 games with the Rocket, showcasing three goals and eight assists, had previously participated in 17 NHL games with the Canadiens this season before his injury, contributing with one goal and two assists.
Xhekaj's time in Laval demonstrated improvement, and the Canadiens likely hope for a similar progression from Barron as they make this defensive switch. Xhekaj is expected to be part of the Canadiens lineup when they face the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
Notably, this AHL stint marks Xhekaj's first experience in the league after commencing his professional career in the NHL as an undrafted free agent. The 22-year-old, hailing from Hamilton, has amassed 68 NHL games over the last two seasons.
