In 2020, Yaroslav Askarov was widely considered the best goaltending prospect since Carey Price. Although there were rumors he could be picked as high as 5th overall, he slipped to 11th, where the Nashville Predators eagerly drafted the Russian goalie.
Four years later, Askarov has established himself as the top goaltending prospect globally, playing for the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals, where he posted a .911 save percentage and a 2.39 goals-against average. He also played two NHL games with impressive stats. Despite his talent, Askarov remains behind Juuse Saros on Nashville's depth chart, leading him to request a trade to become a true number-one goalie for another team.
Friedman reports that the Predators are seeking either an established NHL player or a high-level prospect, preferably a forward or defenseman, in exchange for Askarov.
Although this is a steep price, it could be worth it for teams in need of a top-tier goalie. With the NHL season just around the corner, time is running out for a deal to be made.
It remains to be seen where Askarov will land, but it's clear he doesn't want to return to Nashville or Milwaukee.
