Marner has been linked to several teams in trade rumors since the Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs. Among those teams is the Nashville Predators. When asked today about the possibility of pursuing Marner, Trotz's response was rather noncommittal.
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported today that the Leafs have not yet had any conversations with other teams about a possible Marner trade. He mentioned that the team was focused on hiring Craig Berube and finalizing their coaching staff. With those tasks completed, trade discussions could start soon.
Interestingly, Barry Trotz made a significant move today by trading defenseman Ryan McDonagh back to the Tampa Bay Lightning, opening up $6.75 million in cap space. The speculation is that this move was made to give the team flexibility in the free agent and trade markets, with Trotz reportedly looking to acquire a top scorer like Marner.
It seems very likely that the Predators will make a serious effort to bring in Marner. Stay tuned this summer to see where the Leafs superstar might go, if he leaves the team at all.
