The New York Rangers had an eventful season, which ended with a premature exit from this year's playoffs. As they shift their gears towards next season, a big decision looms on the horizon in regards to former 1st overall pick, Alexis Lafreniere. The young French phenom has struggled to become a mainstay scorer with the Rangers, and he's reportedly generating interest from a Canadian team. Should New York give up on Lafreniere just yet?

Canucks Pursuing Lafreniere

The Vancouver Canucks are in an interesting position, which wasn't helped by some puzzling moves at the trade deadline this year. While they'd like to get younger, they have to move some key veteran players out to clear some cap space. A Lafreniere trade could be the perfect opportunity to do both.

Rick Dhaliwal, a trusted insider, recently went on the Sekeres and Price podcast to discuss the Canucks, and he dropped some major information regarding the Canuck's interest in Lafreniere.

«Lafrenière, they really like him they're going to try and create cap space Myers, Garland, if there's something there for Boeser, Miller, you're gonna hear these names at the NHL Draft again.» - Dhaliwal

What Would it Take?

New York would certainly like to add some proven NHL veterans to their lineup in order to become a surefire contender next season. If they wanted to move Lafreniere to the Canucks, they could potentially receive multiple of Brock Boeser, Connor Garland, JT Miller, and Tyler Myers, while also adding a first-round pick and a prospect, such as Aatu Raty.

Perhaps New York could take some of the leverage in the trade by taking on Tyler Myers' awful contract, while also receiving younger NHL vets such as Garland and Boeser. That would make for a scary New York lineup next season while adding some massive size on the back end.
