Ottawa Senators insider Bruce Garrioch reports that the team is likely to trade veteran forward Vladimir Tarasenko as the Senators find themselves at the bottom of the NHL standings.
According to Garrioch's column for The Ottawa Sun, new GM Steve Staios is expected to engage with veteran players in the coming days or weeks to facilitate trades for future assets, and Tarasenko is anticipated to waive his no-trade clause for a move to a contender before the March 4th trade deadline.
The 32-year-old Tarasenko has posted respectable numbers with 10 goals and 28 points in 37 games this season after signing a one-year deal with the Senators in free agency.
Tarasenko had a prolonged stint in the free-agent market before joining the Senators, eventually signing a one-year, $5 million deal on July 27th, almost a month after the market opened. Reports suggest that Tarasenko initially sought a longer-term deal, but as his asking price decreased, the market had already shifted. Other free-agent forwards secured contracts early in the period for more reasonable terms, leaving Tarasenko with a one-year offer from the Senators, a team that has not made the playoffs in six seasons.
Now, with the Senators facing a challenging season, Tarasenko is likely to be part of trade deadline discussions once again. The failed season in Ottawa prompts speculation about his availability. The question now is whether any teams are interested in acquiring the skilled forward.
