After years of speculation, it looks like the Ottawa Senators are finally set to move to a new downtown arena near Parliament Hill.

The Senators have been playing at the Canadian Tire Centre (CTC) since 1996, when they opened the arena with a game against the Montreal Canadiens. Now, almost 30 years later, it seems the team and the National Capital Commission (NCC) are close to an agreement for land at LeBreton Flats, where the new arena will be built. An official announcement could come as soon as this week.

According to insiders, a deal is nearly finalized, with the deadline for securing a land lease approaching. Once the agreement is in place, the team is expected to move quickly to start construction. If everything goes smoothly, the Senators could be playing in their new arena by the 2030 NHL season.

The current CTC arena was built in a location far from downtown, which has been inconvenient for fans. The new arena, just minutes from Parliament Hill, will offer much better accessibility for fans in the Ottawa region.

Senators owner Michael Andlauer, who bought the team in June 2023, was given a 12-month extension by NCC CEO Tobi Nussbaum to explore the feasibility of the project. It now appears that Andlauer's vision is close to becoming a reality, ensuring the team stays in Ottawa for years to come.
