The team announced on Monday that their captain has signed a two-year contract extension with an annual value of $8.7 million, a nod to his iconic No. 87. This deal will keep Crosby with the Penguins through the 2026-27 season.
Penguins GM Kyle Dubas praised Crosby, calling him "the greatest player of his generation and one of the greatest in hockey history."
Crosby, who turned 37 in August, had another outstanding season, scoring 42 goals and earning 94 points. This was his second straight year with over 90 points, and the first time he scored more than 40 goals since 2016-17.
The three-time Stanley Cup champion was entering the final year of his 12-year, $104.4 million contract, which also had an $8.7 million cap hit. Crosby has always expressed his desire to stay in Pittsburgh and finish his career with the team that drafted him first overall in 2005.
The extension ensures that Crosby, along with longtime teammates Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, will continue to chase another Stanley Cup together. Despite missing the playoffs the last two seasons, the Penguins made a significant move this summer by acquiring star defenseman Erik Karlsson.
Crosby has scored 592 goals and tallied 1,596 points over 19 seasons with Pittsburgh. He's set to begin his 20th season with the team, and his 18th year as captain, second only to Detroit's Steve Yzerman for longest-serving captain in NHL history.
