The first set of players are on waivers and a surprising name could be the first one claimed. According to NHL insider Darren Dreger goaltender Spencer Martin is unlikely to make it through waivers without being claimed.
Two main contenders in the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets are reportedly the most likely destinations.
The Lightning lost Andrei Vasilevskiy to a back injury yesterday. This leaves them with Jonas Johansson and Hugo Alnefelt as their goaltender duo. Adding in Spencer Martin gives them another option to add stability to the position.
On the Blue Jackets side, they have Elvis Merzlikins as their starter. He struggled heavily in 30 NHL games last season. The other options are Daniil Tarasov and Aaron Dell. Both players have also struggled in their NHL appearances. Martin could be a more stable option than any goaltender they currently have.
Martin in 16 games in the AHL last season had a 2.43 goals against average and a 0.916 save percentage. He had less stellar numbers at the NHL level but has shown the ability to play at that level. At 28 years old Martin is a good stop gap but likely won't steal the job from a current starter.
