New Lightning Forward Connor Sheary found himself at the center of a mini controversy Tuesday night as he successfully drew a fantom high-sticking penalty. Sheary inked a three-year deal with the bolts this summer. The victim of the poor call was Predators defenseman Jeremy Lauzon, who was given a two minute minor penalty for high-sticking.
As the play unfolded, Lauzon's stick did come dangerously close to Sheary's visor, but as he noticed the stick getting close to his face, the Lightning forward whipped his head back as if the stick had smacked him hard in the face. The replay shows that the stick did not, in fact, hit him at all.
It is relatively common for officials to make this call as the head whipping back is typically a tell-tail sign of an infraction. The refs can't get every call right every time but it is frustrating to see such a bad call made literally moments after the season began.
