Defenseman Matt Dumba signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes for the 20232024 season, likely expecting to stay with the team all season. However, as a veteran, things can change, and trade deadlines often lead to moves for players who can provide a boost to other teams. This led to Dumba being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Dumba, 29, played in 58 games for the Coyotes before being acquired by Lightning GM Julien Brisebois. After the trade, he played 18 games for Tampa, contributing two assists and 33 penalty minutes. Despite his efforts, it was reported that the Lightning will let him walk in free agency this summer.
Brisebois' decision to let Dumba go isn't surprising. Dumba was brought in to help the Lightning push for another Stanley Cup, but it didn't work out. Letting him go allows the team to look for a younger, healthier defenseman with similar qualities at a lower cost.
It remains to be seen if Dumba will find a new team for the 20242025 season. His experience could be valuable for a young team looking to add veteran depth to become contenders. Will any of the other 31 GMs find a place for him? We'll have to wait and see.
