On October 1st, the NHL's Board of Governors approved the Tampa Bay Lightning's ownership change, and yesterday, the organization confirmed the news in an official press release.
Jeff Vinik bought the team in 2010 for $93 million and sold just over 50% of it for $1.8 billion. He is set to pursue his duties for three years before stepping down and letting the group of investors led by Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz take charge.
Today, a new report confirmed that after the sale, Vinik spent $20 million in bonuses for his full-time employees, who each received between $50 and $66k.
Vinik handed out the following memo to organization employees:
During Vinik's ownership, the Lightning won two Stanley Cups, in 2020 and 2021. In the next three years of his tenure, it's safe to say that Vinik will do all he can to win another Cup, cementing his legacy for years to come.
