Auston Matthews grew up as a fan of the Coyotes since he is from Arizona. Sadly, the Coyotes were not very good when Matthews was growing up, a trend that continues to this day. He joked about this when he was asked what teams he disliked as a kid.
How sad is it that a team can't form any meaningful rivalries because of how bad they are? It is hard to imagine how that could ever happen again in today's NHL.
Saying the Coyotes history is 'not good' is arguably being quite generous to the much maligned franchise. From the time Matthews was born to the time he was drafted, the Coyotes made the playoffs just seven times. That in itself isn't terrible until you realize three of those appearances came when Matthews was three years old or younger. Additionally, they won just two rounds in that same stretch, both coming in 2012 when the team made their first and only conference finals appearance in franchise history. Its fair to say that Matthews can make fun of those teams as much as he wants.
