The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a freefall. After stating the season a bit slow, they seemed to correct the course with a 3-1-1 road trip. However, the team has now lost four games in a row and their sense of identity appears to be gone. The team embarrassed themselves with their performance against the Boston Bruins in an effort that lead to Brad Treliving calling for a private meeting with all the players and coaching staff.
The meeting was closed to media but NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has heard a few things to come out of it anyways. What he's heard is very troubling.
Perhaps the most shocking revelation to come out of this meeting is the following quote from Friedman.
With the entire team present at the meeting, it begs the question, who said this? Not that they are not correct. Based on everything we have seen from the Leafs this season, they absolutely are soft. However, hearing that from a player is one thing. A coach calling his team soft is another thing but a general manager calling his team soft is a whole extra level of bad.
For starters, general managers build their teams. While Brad Treliving is new to the Leafs, he has already made several notable moves in an effort to add toughness to this team. Ryan Reaves, Max Domi, and Tyler Bertuzzi were all supposedly brought in specifically to make the team harder to play against. If anything, they've done the exact opposite.
Through 12 games Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and Ryan Reaves have combined for 6 assists and 2 goals. Reaves fought twice in the first two games of the season and has been completely invisible since. He was even benched halfway through tonight's game.
This all begs the question, who is to blame for the Leafs failures this season? Is it Brad Treliving or is it on the players?
