NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported today that the Leafs and Nylander mutually agreed to keep contract negotiations quiet. Neither side wants this information to become public.
Given that we have heard basically nothing about Nylander's contract negotiations, this seems to be true. As such, it would also make sense of both sides have continued to negotiate his next deal behind closed doors, which is exactly what LeBrun believes is going on.
Nylander is currently riding the most productive hot-streak of his career. Through a season-long 15-game point streak he has 10 goals and 22 points, leading the Leafs in scoring.
The Leafs already have three players with eight-digit cap hits. It seems borderline unfathomable that the team could afford another one and still fill out the rest of the roster with legitimate NHL level players. As such, the Leafs may have to get creative with Nylander's next deal, or continue to face their ongoing problem with depth scoring.
