It's been a story for 20 years - no matter how good the Leafs forwards are, they allow too many goals. They've had flashes from dozens of goalies - the latest being Ilya Samsonov, who signed a one-year arbitration extension in the off-season. Making $3.55M annually, he is one of the worst goalies in the league.
Out of the 60 goalies who have played a NHL game so far this season, Samsonov is 59th, with a .862 save percentage.
Sheldon Keefe has had enough, making a cry for help:
With Matt Murray likely never returning to the league, Joseph Woll out until February, and Martin Jones not being an ideal starting option, the leafs are running out of solutions.
Samsonov is unplayable at his current state, so a move needs to happen.
All of the Leafs' core, as well as Fraser Minten, Easton Cowan, and Matthew Knies, are completely untouchable.
However, four valuable assets are available:
First Round Pick in Either 2024 or 2026
While the Leafs' 2025 1st is no longer in the organization, they have two prime draft capital assets to work with.
Nick Robertson
Rumours insist that Nicholas Robertson will be available for trade due to his consistency issues. He carries a decent value due to his elite shot, and offensive instincts.
Other prospects Topi Niemela and Dennis Hildeby may also be available.
It will be interesting to see where the Maple Leafs end up after this saga.
UPDATE
Ilya Samsonov has been placed on waivers.
