Today reporter Dave McCarthy asked William Nylander a question about Auston Matthews that was very revealing to his situation. McCarthy was able to find out Nylander's preferred home for the future.
Nylander's answer indicates that he would prefer to play in Toronto if all things were equal. This begs the question can the Maple Leafs get to a point where Nylander feels he can sign where he would prefer to play?
With this new information in mind, Nylander would likely take less to stay in Toronto. However, the Maple Leafs would still need to stay within a competitive range of what other teams are willing to offer. As of now, they could not do that but a new piece of news could help them this offseason.
With the salary cap going up to 87.7 million, this is a 4 million dollar increase from this season's cap. This would give the Maple Leafs more flexibility to fit Nylander into the team.
The Maple Leafs will still have to move some things around likely to get it to work but the situation feels more hopeful than it has in months.
