After a breakout season in 2023/24, it was surprising that Alex Nylander remained unsigned as August approached. However, he has now landed in an ideal spot.
On Sunday, the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced the signing of Nylander to a one-year AHL contract.
Nylander had a slow start to the year in Pittsburgh but was traded to Columbus, where he had a fantastic run, tallying 11 goals and 16 points in just 23 games. This performance finally showcased his immense potential.
The former No. 8 overall pick had played in less than 100 NHL games before his stint with Columbus. With the Maple Leafs having opportunities in their bottom six, Nylander could be an intriguing fit for the team.
Nylander will start the year with the Marlies and try to build on his promising season. If he continues to develop, the 26-year-old may finally live up to the promise he showed when he was drafted No. 8 overall by the Sabres in 2016.
