The Toronto Maple Leafs named Auston Matthews their new captain this off-season, and while we've not yet seen how things will play out on the ice, it's clear that he's very good in the role. He showed that again on Tuesday, as No. 34 was asked a question by the infamous Steve Simmons, whose ridiculous questions have frustrated many a Maple Leaf over the years.
During the media scrum, Matthews was asked about his feelings on the NHL's pay compared to the elite athletes of the MLB, NFL and NBA, and his first reaction simply says it all.
Matthews put his face in his hand and simply sighed *Steve* as he expressed his frustration with the question, which has no place being asked on the eve of the regular season, before ultimately composing himself and answering the question. On the surface, it's not the worst thing to ask, but that's the type of question that should be sent towards the league's Commissioner, as Matthews expressed he is quite happy with how he is paid as one of the league's highest paid players.
Ultimately, Matthews has plenty to focus on heading into yet another critical campaign with the Maple Leafs, and given his new role as the captain and the injury concerns that have arisen this off-season, his focus is clearly elsewhere. The team will start their 2024/25 campaign on the road in Montreal on Wednesday, so hopefully the team are more focused on the new season than Simmons, who continues to baffle at Maple Leafs media availabilities.
