The Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares have enjoyed a successful partnership since he signed with them as a free agent. However, a new report shows this almost didn't happen.
Insider Chris Johnston confirmed on the Steve Dangle Podcast that the San Jose Sharks made a significant contract offer to John Tavares when he was a free agent.
At the time, the Sharks were a strong playoff contender and reached the Conference Finals the year after missing out on Tavares. Instead of joining the Sharks, Tavares chose to return home, signing a 7-year deal with the Maple Leafs worth $11 million AAV, a significant discount compared to the Sharks' offer.
Since then, Tavares has become the captain of the Maple Leafs and a beloved player on the team. However, team success has been elusive, and heading into the final year of his contract, Tavares will once again try to bring the Stanley Cup to Toronto.
