On Monday morning, Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff appeared on Sportsnet 590 radio and stated that the Toronto Maple Leafs have no interest in signing Mitch Marner to a contract extension, despite recent reports. Seravalli also mentioned that a trade involving Marner could happen soon, with the NHL Entry Draft and the opening of free agency coming up within the next seven days.
Marner is the most logical candidate for a trade among the Leafs' core players. He's still young, has the potential to consistently score 90+ points in the regular season, and can play on the first line and first power play unit. Despite his struggles in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Marner is undeniably an elite player.
Other members of the 'Core 4' are either likely unmovable or untouchable. John Tavares' $11 million contract makes it difficult for any team to take on, even with only one year remaining. Auston Matthews and William Nylander are more likely to remain key pieces for the Leafs going forward.
There will undoubtedly be many teams interested in acquiring Marner, though the price will be high. At 27, Marner has several prime years left, which could lead to a bidding war and a substantial return for the Maple Leafs.
