Mitch Marner is rumored to be on the move this off-season, and The Fourth Period's Dennis Berstein has revealed the likely trade details. After another disappointing playoff run, Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving and President of Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan have stated that "everything is on the table" to help push the team to the top of the NHL.
The most talked about change is breaking up the "Core 4," specifically moving John Tavares or Mitch Marner, as both are in the final year of their contracts. Tavares has openly stated his intention to play the final year of his deal in Toronto. While Marner has also expressed his desire to stay in Toronto long-term, he seems to be under pressure from fans and the media.
One insider, Dennis Berstein of The Fourth Period, has suggested where Mitch Marner might end up and what the return for the Maple Leafs could be. Speaking on Sportsnet's 'The Big Show,' Berstein indicated that Marner might be traded to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Marner's contract has a cap hit of $10.9 million, so moving it is no small feat, and he would need to waive his no-movement clause. However, Berstein's suggestion makes sense. The combined cap hit of Karlsson and Theodore is $11.1 million. By trading them for Marner, the Knights actually gain cap space, while the extra $200,000 the Leafs would take on doesn't significantly impact their off-season. The Leafs are also reportedly willing to pay Marner's $7.25 million signing bonus, due on July 1, to facilitate a trade.
This isn't the first time Vegas has been mentioned as a likely destination for Marner, given that they are a perennial contender, are in a tax-free state, are willing to spend, and have the assets the Leafs may covet.
