Tavares has been in a legal battle with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) over a $15.25 million signing bonus he received from the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2018.
The former Leafs captain, who was replaced by Auston Matthews this year, is arguing that because he was still an American citizen at the time he signed his $77 million contract, his bonus should be taxed under U.S. laws, not Canada's higher rate of around 46%.
According to Editor in Leaf, the chances of Tavares losing the case are high. If that happens, it's likely he'll look to sign with a U.S. team for his next contract, possibly in a low-tax state like Tennessee or Florida, to avoid further tax issues.
If the ruling goes against him, Tavares may leave Toronto, and Canadian NHL teams could face increased pressure to adjust their contracts to prevent future tax-related disputes.
