Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau were not only great hockey players but also beloved figures in the community. Since their tragic passing, the NHL has taken multiple opportunities to honor them. As the 2024-25 preseason kicked off, many teams, including the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins, paid tribute with a league-wide memorial video followed by a 13-second moment of silence.
However, during the Maple Leafs' preseason opener against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Arena, some fans chose the moment of silence to shout out in support of their team. While cheering is normal at games, this was not the appropriate time.
Adding to the disappointing fan behavior, the Maple Leafs lost to the Senators 6-5 in overtime. Their next matchup is at the Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday, where it is hoped that the fans will be more respectful. Time will tell if those involved learned anything from the incident.
