Craig Berube earned the respect of some Toronto Maple Leafs fans when he called a timeout during their 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. In that timeout, he passionately told his players their performance wasn't up to standard.
On Friday, before their game against the New York Rangers, Berube again showed his dedication to maintaining high standards. He stopped practice twice after noticing mistakes in the drills.
The Maple Leafs have started the season strong with a 3-1 record in their first four games. Even in their only loss, a 1-0 defeat to the Montreal Canadiens in the season opener, they played well. However, some might argue they haven't faced tough competition yet, with their opponents not being playoff teams from last season.
Their biggest challenge so far will come on Saturday when they host the New York Rangers, a team that finished last season with an NHL-best 46-26-10 record.
The Leafs have had a light schedule so far, playing just four games in 10 days. But starting with the Rangers game, they'll begin a tougher stretch of six games in 10 days.
