The heartbreaking deaths of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew are still fresh in many people's minds. On August 29 just before their sister's wedding the two brothers were struck & killed by a drunk driver while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township New Jersey. The tragedy occurred on the eve of what was supposed to be a joyful family event where both Johnny & Matthew were set to be groomsmen.
The driver Sean Higgins was reportedly speeding, driving recklessly & under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. His blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.087% over the legal limit. Prosecutors are still gathering information for the case which is expected to continue in court next month.
The Gaudreau family has requested that 911 calls & other sensitive records from the crash to be sealed, a request that state officials have granted. However some media outlets have challenged this wanting to access the recordings to ensure they have accurate information for their reporting.
The Columbus Blue Jackets honored the Gaudreau brothers during their home opener against the Florida Panthers. Players wore Johnny Gaudreau jerseys during warm ups & a banner was raised in his memory. A memorial inside Nationwide Arena displayed Johnny's jersey, sticks & other mementos to celebrate his legacy. During a touching video tribute Johnny's wife Meredith encouraged fans to be inspired by his life instead of focusing on his loss.
In a powerful tribute, the Blue Jackets started the game with only four skaters leaving Johnny's left wing position open for the opening faceoff. After winning the face off they placed the puck at his spot & fans chanted Johnny Hockey in a touching moment.
As the court case continues the focus now shifts to honoring Johnny & Matthew's memories & celebrating the impact they had on the ice & in the lifes of those around them. Their legacy will live on through many people they touched in their careers & beyond.
