Marc Savard is no longer an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames.
The team announced on Wednesday that Savard and the Flames mutually agreed to part ways.
Savard joined the Flames last June as an assistant coach under Ryan Huska. This was his second stint coaching in the NHL. Before coaching the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL for two seasons, he was an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues under head coach Craig Berube.
Though Savard still had time left on his contract with the Flames, Wednesday's announcement allows him to explore new opportunities.
Interestingly, Berube was recently introduced as the new head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs but did not comment on his plans for the assistant coaching staff. This has led to speculation that Savard might reunite with Berube in Toronto. Another coach linked to the Leafs, DJ Smith, may stay with the Los Angeles Kings after Jim Hiller had his interim tag removed and signed an extension.
The Leafs have not yet commented on their current assistant coaches. Former Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, now with the New Jersey Devils, might consider bringing some of his assistants from last season.
While with the Blues, Savard helped the team achieve the third-best power play in the NHL, with a 24.3 percent success rate. Mike Van Ryn was another assistant under Berube in 2019-20.
With many coaching vacancies still open around the NHL, the offseason continues to be busy. Stay tuned for more updates.
