With Dakota Joshua set to return to the Canucks lineup the team needed to free up a roster spot & it appears Nils Aman will be the one to make room. Vancouver has placed the 24-year-old on waivers with the intention of assigning him to the AHL's Abbotsford.
Aman's path to the NHL has been unique. Drafted by Colorado in the sixth round in 2020 he didn't sign with them eventually joining Vancouver two years later. After a brief AHL stint at the beginning of the 2022-23 season he was called up to the Canucks playing 68 NHL games that year. Last season he split time between the NHL where he recorded four goals & three assists in 43 games, & the AHL adding 15 points in 15 games. He signed a two year $1.65 million extension in November making him a budget friendly option for Vancouver.
This season, Aman has appeared in only four of the Canucks nine games notching two assists. While he's shown potential it wasn't enough to secure his roster spot especially with other players waiting for opportunities.
Interestingly Vancouver had alternatives. They've been moving players between the NHL & AHL recently including winger Arshdeep Bains. Instead of sending Bains down to open up a spot for Joshua the Canucks chose to keep him suggesting he may have a chance to solidify his place in the lineup. Meanwhile, Aman's low cap hit & experience (115 NHL games) could make him a tempting pickup for other teams looking to add depth.
