Former Vancouver Canuck Arrested And Charged With Fraud
On Tuesday, Prab Rai, a former draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks, was arrested at the age of 34. The ex-professional hockey player is facing charges of fraud, allegedly involving millions of dollars, following an extensive investigation by the Surrey RCMP Financial Crimes Unit (FCU).
The inquiry, initiated almost three years ago on January 14, 2021, stemmed from a victim's complaint, asserting the loss of several million dollars in real estate investment opportunities. Surrey RCMP, in a media release, stated that Rai is accused of committing "large-scale financial frauds" spanning from October 9, 2015, to July 20, 2018. Currently, Rai has been released under court-imposed conditions as he awaits his next appearance.
Furthermore, Rai is also entangled in a civil lawsuit where he faces allegations of defrauding a realtor of over $2.8 million. According to an article by Keith Fraser in the Vancouver Sun on August 29, 2022, the realtor claimed that Rai presented himself as a "successful and wealthy business person" with connections to prominent figures in local and international business, as well as retired hockey players.
Prab Rai's NHL Career Didn't Last long
Hailing from Surrey, Rai was chosen by the Canucks in the fifth round (131st overall) of the 2008 draft. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch, the center made a name for himself with the Seattle Thunderbirds, leading the team in scoring during his final WHL season with 69 points in 67 games.
Despite showing promise in junior hockey, Rai's career took a hit at age 20 when he suffered a serious back injury in a car accident on the Port Mann Bridge. His professional hockey stint was limited to 38 games, all in the ECHL, before retiring at 25 years old.
