Tough news for the Vancouver Canucks & their fans as defenseman Derek Forbort has stepped away from the team for personal reasons.

Forbot signed a one-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks this summer. The Canucks who have not won yet in their first three games of the new NHL season will have to play without Forbort indefinitely as there is no clear set date for his return.

The team announced this morning that they have recalled defenseman Erik Brännström from their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford to fill the gap left by Forbort's absence.

Forbort had been getting significant ice time, playing over 16 minutes per game in his first three outings with the Canucks. He joined Vancouver on a one-year, $1.5 million deal after spending the last few seasons with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins chose not to re-sign him following the 2023-24 season.

Forbort's absence will be felt, especially after the Canucks also lost defenseman Nikita Zadorov to free agency during the offseason. With goaltender Thatcher Demko still recovering from injury the Canucks are relying on Arturs Silovs & Kevin Lankinen to hold down the net.

The team will take on the Florida Panthers tonight as they continue to search for their first win of the season after having suffered one regulation loss & two overtime losses so far.

Stay tuned for more updates.
