Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has revealed that he is opting out of representing his team at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.
The reason he will not be attending the event is for the need for the need to rest and recover. Ovechkin conveyed his decision to the Capitals, expressing a preference to skip the All-Star Weekend to focus on preparing for the second half of the season.
Having attended the 2023 NHL All-Star Game with his son Sergei, Alex Ovechkin is already a 13-time All-Star and has occasionally chosen to use the break for rest. Despite leading the Capitals in scoring this season with 24 points in 36 games, he has encountered challenges in goal-scoring, tallying eight so far.
Notably, Ovechkin is closing in on Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, needing just 65 more. The Capitals, still actively contending in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race, acknowledge the importance of preparing for the upcoming challenges.
Tom Wilson, earning his second All-Star nomination in three seasons, is set to represent the team. Wilson's family will be present, adding a personal touch to the event in his hometown of Toronto.
