Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov has joined the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and will be taking an indefinite leave from the team to receive care.
The 31-year-old, who has recorded six goals and 17 points in 43 games this season, was not present at Capitals practice on Monday morning.
Kuznetsov will rejoin the team when approved for on-ice participation by program administrators.
Currently in the seventh season of an eight-year, $62.4 million contract with an average annual value of $7.8 million, Kuznetsov was drafted 26th overall by Washington in the 2010 NHL Draft. He played a crucial role in helping the Capitals secure their first-ever Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
Throughout his 723-game NHL career, the Chelyabinsk, Russia native has notched 171 goals and 569 points. In postseason play, he boasts 29 goals and 67 points across 87 games.
