According to multiple reports, russian center Kuznetsov cleared waivers today and will be assigned to the Hershey Bears by the Washington Capitals.
According to Frank Seravalli, he is believed to be the highest salaried player ever rostered in the AHL. Kuznetsov remains sidelined from game action as he's yet to be cleared through the Player Assistance Program.
Once a top-line center, Kuznetsov's performance has declined notably in recent seasons. Last year, he dropped from 78 points to 55, and this season has been even tougher with just six goals and 11 assists in 43 games despite increased ice time.
General Manager Brian MacLellan mentioned the move is about giving Kuznetsov a fresh start, which could mean a trade or a buyout potentially.
A buyout would cost $3.8 million against the cap next season and $2 million in 2025-26. Trading him with salary retention seems more likely than a buyout at this point.
Stay tuned for more.
