In an interview with The Hockey News, Byfield revealed he had a wrist injury that significantly limited his ability to shoot the puck last year.
""I only got three goals last year, that's definitely what everyone is talking about. But you don't realize what issues and stuff people are dealing with. You know, second game of the year I sprained my wrist and the whole year didn't miss any time [from that injury] and same with the other wrist. So, I couldn't really feel my hands out there the whole year."
While it is impressive that Byfield was able to battle through such an injury and play somewhat decent hockey, it is unfortunate that he couldn't really find the back of the net for himself. His performance last year showed us what kind of a mindset and determination he has. Hopefully now he can back that up on the score sheet now that he can use both hands to their full extent.
Byfield Looks To Take Another Step This Season
Last season Byfield scored three goals and 19 assists for 22 points in his 53 game stint with the Kings. While it was encouraging to see his playmaking take a step forward, the goal scoring will have to follow. He had a shooting percentage of just over 4% last year due to his wrist injury so he should see some positive regression.
In the 2021-22 season, Byfield played 40 games with the Kings and while he scored just 5 goals, he only had 39 shots on goal giving him a shooting percentage of just under 13%. If he can get back to that level of efficiency, he should easily be able to hit the 20 goal mark this year.
